Join Dr. Smita Dewan as she dives deep into how immigration policies create stressors for individuals and families and have a direct impact on their mental well-being, with resulting negative mental health outcomes, including trauma, isolation and acculturation stress. This 2.25 hour long beginning to intermediate level online self-study, recorded webinar, created in November, 2021 for social work and other clinical professionals, discusses the impact of immigration policies on the mental well-being of immigrants.
Participants will be able to:
- list 2 reasons why it is important to understand how immigration policy affects immigrant mental health
- describe 2 stressors for immigrants during the immigration process; identify two immigration policies which no longer have protections for keeping families together
- list two post-migration stressors for immigrants
- list two mental health symptoms of stress experienced by parents and children separated at the southern border

Dr. Dewan is currently an Assistant Professor at the New York City College of Technology/CUNY. She has her doctorate in Social Work from Fordham University, and a law degree from the National Law School of India University.
