“Essential Co-occurring Disorders for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment” is a recorded audio/visual online clinical course that will familiarize professionals with strategies and techniques that are useful with those that are dually-diagnosed. It was last updated in 2020, with the addition of two clinical video demonstrations – one of the use of an assessment tool for use with dually-diagnosed individuals -the second is a contrasting video demonstration of a standard assessment tool used with a woman experiencing symptoms of psychosis.  Beginning and intermediate level professionals will find basic information about Substance Use Disorders and how both MI and CBT strategies can be effectively used with those with Co-occurring Disorders. Videotaped clinical vignettes illustrate techniques which can help the clinical professional working with clients with marijuana, cocaine, or alcohol use disorders to reduce client substance use.

About the Course: The term “Co-Occurring Disorders” describes the simultaneous existence of a Mental Health (MH) Disorder and a Substance Use Disorder (SUD), more complicated to diagnose and treat than either Mental Health or Substance Use Disorders alone. Many treatment strategies useful for either disorder, like Motivational Interviewing skills or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, can be used successfully with clients with Co-Occurring Disorders.
CE Information This is a 6 CE course ($35) for re-credentialing CASACs. Cost includes CE credit.

About the Clinical Instructor: Tina Iler, LCSWR, is in private and agency practice in the mid-Hudson region of New York State. She is the Social Work consultant for the BPTI Continuing Education group and the BPTI contact person for continuing education in New Jersey. She has over 25 years experience in direct practice with clients with mental health and substance use disorders.  She is passionate about Motivational Interviewing and trains extensively in MI. As well, she has been trained by the Beck Institute in CBT and the Linehan Institute for DBT and mindfulness.  In her individual therapy, she provides compassionate support to work towards developing coping skills for healthier choices, improved self care, and building resilience to live life with greater ease and acceptance of past or present circumstances. As a trainer, she is resourceful, dynamic and creative. About the Narrator Instructor:
The voice of the narrator in this course is that of Ruth Campbell, LCSW, Ph.D. She is currently in private practice in New York City and in upstate NY. She is the Continuing Education Director of the non-profit organization Best Practice Trainers, Inc., which has a research and training mission. She has 40 years’ experience working in mental health settings as a clinician, teacher, and author, and over 20 years’ experience in direct practice with Substance Use Disorders.

Goals: Participants will gain an understanding of Co-occurring Disorders:  definition, typical Mental Health disorders, typical Substance Use Disorders and the prevalence of co-occurrence. Participants will understand  recommended assessment measures and treatment strategies for both early and later stages of change for those with Co-occurring Disorders.  Participants will gain an understanding of applicable assessment and treatment skills through modeling, available in video clinical scenarios.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to :

4. describe one theory of the etiology of Co-occurring Disorders.
5. identify 3 mental health disorders currently listed in the DSM5.
6. identify 2 symptoms of severe substance use disorders.
7. list 3 mental health symptoms that co-occur and are the consequence of substance use.
8. identify 1 assessment measure for Co-occurring Disorders.
9. explain 1 suggested mode of treatment for those with Co-occurring Disorders.

Course completion requirements
To earn CE credit, participants must log in, complete a pretest, attend the entire course as determined electronically, complete a course evaluation and a posttest with at least 75% accuracy. Those who do not make 75% the first time can have a second try with the availability of the training materials. Further attempts must be authorized by the CE Director. Certificates of completion will be emailed within 10 business days of course completion. Course credit cannot be given retroactively. No partial credit can be given for any partially completed course.
