Couples Dynamics and Recovery

2.25 CEs | $35 | Dr. Afua Forson

In this course, Dr. Forson discusses Behavioral Couples Therapy as an evidence based treatment for couples for whom substance use is a problem. She extends the discussion to couples who may have a substance use disorder problem, describing 3 typical cases of couples in various stages of recovery and discussing effective interventions.

This is a two-and-a quarter-hour long intermediate to advanced level, online, self-study, recorded webinar created in December, 2021, for social work and other clinical professionals. The course outlines the neurological basis of attraction/attachment and the neurological basis of addiction/recovery.

Participants will be able to:

  1. describe one effect that stress has on the body.
  2. describe one way in which addiction hijacks the existing neuronal pathways that facilitate satisfaction or pleasure
  3. describe one way that counselors can facilitate emotional regulation for a distressed couple
  4. identify 2 levels of substance use that are appropriate for couples who want to engage in Behavioral Couples Therapy
