“ I have completed my Ph.D., am teaching at Nyack College, and am now father of a wonderful daughter, Arya Camilla. From 2006 until 2019, I worked as a Child Protective Specialist for NYC Administration for Children’s Services, NY. This was a full-time position in which I perform investigations of reports of child abuse/neglect and ensure child safety and welfare.
During the time I was working for NYC ACS, I was also interning part-time as a mental health counselor for ACS and for Veritas, Inc. For both agencies, I assessed clients, developed treatment plans, and led individual and group therapy sessions utilizing Evidence Based Models for mental health, family issues, and addiction issues. I reviewed and evaluated clients’ progress in relation to measurable goals described in treatment and care plans, and coordinated counseling efforts with other mental health professionals, doctors, nurses and social workers.”
My participation in Best Practice Trainers, Inc. has been ongoing since we presented live workshops on CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Co-Occurring Disorders in New York City in 2013. I now am very interested in the topic of support for Mental Health clinicians. I’ve personally created several webinars, one on In-Home Mental Health Care, and one on Mental Health Evaluations for Immigrants, which has become a passion of mine.
I enjoyed being President and part of the Board for BPTI from August, 2014 – 2019. As a result of the online platform, BPTI has trained hundreds of counselors in CBT and Motivational Interviewing methods, which I’m proud of. We’ve made decisions that have begun to expand our role as continuing education providers in New York to continuing education providers internationally. We have at least one research project cooking that is close to my heart. Substance misuse has been a difficult problem for Latinos in this state. The study of Latino counselors in New York State is beginning to yield data which will reveal what barriers there are to Latino participation in Substance Use services.
